Traditional Boats Marathon
the largest public event in Croatia

story

Reviving old tradition

Lađa boat was the main transportation vehicle in the past centuries of Neretva Delta. Lađa boat is first mentioned as a war boat of Duke Domagoj’s pirates who were fighting against Venetians. After the Neretva delta became fertile soil, the lađa boat was mainly used to transport fruit and vegetables through the canal network. To honor the tradition of the lađa boat which was forgotten for a long time, a Lađa Boat Marathon is organized every August. It is considered to be the largest public event in Croatia. More than 30 teams consisting of 10 persons per boat need to paddle through 20km of Neretva river, from Metković city to Ploče city.
